Bethany Buller

Luke 1: 32-33

“He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David and he will reign over Israel forever; His kingdom will never end.“

Reflection

How shocked must Mary have been? An angel appeared to her and told her that God found favor with her and she would bear a child who would fit that powerful description. He would be great, the Son of God, He would have a throne here on earth, and that His reign would never end. All of these thousands of years later, reading what that angel told Mary brings me to tears. It is beautiful. The man described in those two verses came to earth to save me, to save you. Not only to give us everlasting life in heaven, but to give us abundant life here on earth where we live in this imperfect world.

When Christ died for us, He gave us the blessing of having Him live in us, if we accept Him. It says in the above scriptures that Jesus’ kingdom will reign forever. Christ, who is all powerful, came so we could experience true peace and live boldly as we wait for him to return, and then for eternity when we are in His presence.

I have struggled to accept that Jesus is great in all circumstances, that He rules over the painful times in my life. I gripped tightly to my dreams and expectations of the life I would live. I was able to experience strength when I finally surrendered trying to rule my own life. I gave up relying on my own strength to save me. I gave up believing that I alone could fight my way to peace and joy. I finally believe God and what He says.

I spent many years begging God to change circumstances in my life and to allow me to experience things that I thought would fulfill me. Here is the thing, those lost dreams may have brought me joy, but in the end people and dreams do not rule us, they do not provide us with the peace and strength that Jesus does. We have the power of Christ inside of us; we can do all things through Him. That may mean healing, surrendering, celebrating, forgiving, or just the strength to trust that what Jesus says is truth and to rest in that.

This season, celebrate that Jesus, the Son of the Most High, the One seated on the throne, the One who will reign forever, came to earth for you. He is waiting for you to allow Him to reign in your life. The power and peace He brings gives you the ability to face any circumstance in your life. Allow Him to guide you because you trust and believe that He’s got this under control.

Prayer-

Lord, we praise You for Your greatness and power over this world. You are so good to us. May we live boldly and bravely knowing that Your strength is with us, and that we do not face this world alone. You are Holy and worthy of all our praise. We love you, Jesus. Amen.
