Luke 1:46-49 NLT

Mary responded,

“Oh, how my soul praises the Lord. How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior!  For he took notice of his lowly servant girl, and from now on all generations will call me blessed.  For the Mighty One is holy, and he has done great things for me.

REFLECTION

It is pretty remarkable that we see this passage of praise recorded in scripture. In a seemingly intimate family moment, Elizabeth speaks a blessing over Mary, and Mary’s response is praise. Mary lifts up praise – even in her unusual, probably confusing, definitely surprising situation.

It’s pretty standard to say “Praise the Lord” when things go as we hoped or even better than we hoped. But when life doesn’t go according to my plans, I’m typically not inspired to sing praises. I usually feel frustrated or even angry. I complain. I question God.

Mary models for us an atypical response to these unexpected circumstances. She demonstrates steadfast devotion and resolute trust in God. We see gracious submission to God’s plan. This passage is a reminder to me of how important it is to remember God’s faithfulness – to literally recall specific instances of His faithfulness to me personally. Because whatever my circumstance, God is and has been faithful, and His plan and perspective are and have been trustworthy.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, you are worthy of all praise! Thank you for being Lord over our circumstances. You are faithful, you are trustworthy no matter what we are walking through in life. May you give us the fortitude to remember your faithfulness!
